They have been calling Austin the “Portland of Texas” for some time, but it’s time that definition is retired.
Austin now stands on its own as the cultural epicenter of Texas and dare I say, the entire Southeast. It brings a unique view on food, art, and culture and doesn’t stand for any of that uppity city slicker mentality. They are indeed living up to the motto of “Keep Austin Weird.”
I recently made the trip with the Toyota C-HR and found some awesome murals that totally surprised me. Isn’t that the tipping point in a great city? When art hits mainstream enough to make it for everyone. Here are a few of my favorite murals, along with some suggested pairings to really make your images stand out (because if you don’t take a picture did it even happen)?
I ❤️ Queso
Location: 2606 Guadalupe, Austin, TX 78705
The most obvious pairing for this mural is most Texans one true love, queso! Pop into Kerby Lane for some delicious queso (they even have a vegan option… what?!) or any other of their other amazing dishes. Dip while snapping for the most ‘gram worthy/craving inducing pic.
Smile Now Cry Later Rainbow
Location: 2428 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705
Doesn’t this bring a smile to your face? My recommended wall pairing would be a light denim jacket and all the rainbow flair you can find. It will be sure to bring a smile to the faces of anyone passing by, or scrolling by on your Instagram. Here are a few pins to get your flair game started:
TRY TO BE THE RAINBOW IN SOMEONE’S CLOUD.
Greetings from Austin
Location: 1720 S 1st St, Austin, TX 78704
This ICONIC wall is a must see when you are in Austin. It captures all the kitsch + charm of the old vintage postcard while announcing to the world that you made it to the best city in Texas. The detail incorporated is really quite lovely. As you can see this mural pairs fabulously with the Toyota C-HR, those blues were made for each other. Tip: go early to avoid people for the best shot solo shot and grab that gorgeous natural morning light.
Love from Austin
Location: Magnolia Cafe, 1920 S Congress Ave, Austin, TX
A wonderful sentiment to share anytime. Located on the side of the Magnolia Café, this wall is classic but needs a POP of color. And that color should be you! Wear or bring your brightest boldest pieces. Monkey See Monkey Do is right down the street and they have an amazing selection of colorful novelty products that will be sure to set you up for success.
Smile Even if You Don’t Want To
Location: South Congress and Elizabeth St.
We can all use this reminder now and again, right? The typography is to die for and the neutral backdrop will make you really POP. If you are craving something sweet this mural is located right near Hey Cupcake! Trailer so swing by and grab yourself my personal favorite, the tuxedo. Could there be anything more smile educing than you and a cupcake in front of this beauty? I don’t think so.
Willie Nelson Mural
Location: E 7th St & Neches St, Austin, TX 78701
The ultimate Texan, Willie Nelson, adorns a huge building downtown Austin making for a 60-foot by 20-foot mural. One of the largest in the area. They say that Willie is truly a representative of Austin and embodies the city. When snapping a photo here try and do that same. Be authentic, be you, because that is exactly what Willie would want you to do.
Whether you’re planning a trip or just daydreaming, hopefully, these mural and pairing options brought a smile to your face and possibly gave you some fun ideas for your next visit. I can’t wait for my next visit and next round of pairings.
A special thank you to Toyota and the Toyota C-HR for scooting me around Austin + helping me discover these beauties! 🌈
hungry exploring, Texas.
